BONIAN SPACE is pleased to announce the upcoming solo exhibition, Conte d'automne, by the emerging artist Zhao Wei from September 16th to October 10th, 2023, which is also Zhao's first solo exhibition. Curated by Liu Yue, the exhibition will feature over ten paintings from the artist's recent practice.

Born in 1995 in Zhejiang, Zhao Wei graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in architecture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The leap of study fields has made Zhao Wei's artistic creation focus on the emotional expression of architectural space, creating the character of architectural space and constructing an obscure narrative of memory traces on a two-dimensional canvas.

Zhao Wei captures and renders the process of "creating" rather than "building." Unlike the functionality that is emphasized in interior architecture, the space created by Zhao Wei in her works incorporates her subtle understanding of vitality. It is a calm pursuit and planning, which requires the unity of body and mind. It separates the buildings from the concept of cold reinforced concrete and becomes a living space full of stories and visual gaze, a psychological space closely related to human traces. Whether it is the pages of a book that are open or closed, the lazy folds on the sofa, or the dim light and shadow on the bedside, these fragments are like a jigsaw puzzle, causing many unresolved light moments to come to a standstill quietly, the beautiful silence caused by the blurred edge lines evokes the image perception in the viewer's underlying memory.

Conte d’automne, is the artist's mood at the moment of painting, and it is also the mood of the characters who were not present, but meandering out of the spatial memory. When this thought spreads into every light and shadow of the painting through brush strokes, we also know and meet everything obvious or hidden in the story. Those silently flowing, ambiguous imaginations gather together with the temperature of the light, hoping to outline your story in this autumn.
