Overview

Full of merit, yet poetically,

man dwells on this earth.

—— Friedrich Hölderlin, In Lovely Blue

BONIAN SPACE is delighted to announce the upcoming solo exhibition "Poetically, One Dwells" by artist Liu Yichao, which will take place from April 6th to May 6th, 2024. Curated by Gao Yumeng, the exhibition will present more than ten of the artist's latest works.

In the world depicted by Liu Yichao, we witness an organism of colors that quivers with light and air, not confined by solid outlines but guided by the natural scenery, granting colors the priority to guide perception, convey emotions, and construct space. Through repeated adjustments and combinations of the warmth and coolness of colors, their brightness and purity, he reunites the visually scattered elements caused by the wandering of the eyes, thus allowing the existence of things to emerge in the slightly swaying atmosphere, without getting lost in the relationship with the air and other objects due to the dissolution of edges. By increasing the brightness of the darker areas, the spatial hierarchy and focus within the composition are also dissolved, and with delicate brushwork, the warm and cool colors are evenly distributed and merged throughout, allowing the gaze to flow freely.

"The trembling of appearances is the cradle of all things." Liu Yichao's paintings present a transitional state that is flowing, diffusing, and open. He captures the blurry luminescence of objects under a defocused gaze, suspending the directness of the world to touch upon the non-materialistic significance behind it. This is precisely the modern sensibility of life and its poetic dwelling that the artist aims to portray. Whether it's a hurried morning at sunrise, lounging on the lawn for a sunbath, or the sunset glow enveloping a cape, these fragments derived from his everyday perceptual experiences, fluctuating and detached, carry the flow of time and memories of colors and warmth, allowing emotions to linger in their subtle vibrations.

Sunlight, brightly illuminating every dweller open to the world. The deeper we delve into analyzing, attempting to find references to historical experiences within the spectrum and brushstrokes; the more attentively we observe, trying to find traces of grand narratives and familiarity within the blurred figures and faces—the more it seems like we are revisiting ourselves, revealing in a daze those fleeting stories that diffuse in our minds. This perhaps is the poetic discovery entrusted by the artist in his creation, a discovery of the inherent existence of people. He invites us to break free from rational interpretation, to feel and experience the purity and beauty of the world.
