Biography
Jie SHAO (b.1994, Yuyao, Zhejiang Province, China) received a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the School of Intermedia Art, China Academy of Art, China, in 2016, and a master's degree in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design, USA, in 2020. Informed by the experience of displacement, Shao redirects his questions of identity into a long-term observation of physical materials—how they are deformed, standardized, and consumed, to adapt and respond to the shifting cultural and geographic landscapes. This transition of material further becomes a metaphor for individuals, adrift within forces, infrastructures, and systems of the contemporary world. Shao’s sculpture and installation incorporates hand sculpting to manufacturing processing, reflecting the tension between handcrafting and standardization. Alongside physical works, Shao also integrates field notes and textual annotations, tracing the silent narrative of material across cultural and economic contexts. Jie SHAO currently lives and works between Shanghai, China, and New York, USA, and teaches at Pratt Institute, New York, USA.
