Light Society is honored to present Behind the Scene, a solo exhibition of artist Yushi Li, showcasing of three groups of photographic and video works created from 2017 to the present, as well as a newly created video work.

 

This exhibition centers on Yushi Li's use of the "body" as a narrative medium, exploring how the body, as a manifestation of consciousness, carries emotional and affective weight. Through her works, Yushi Li redefines power dynamics, makes visible female desires, and transcends materiality, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relational worlds.

 

Yushi Li's practice spans photography and moving images. Through staged photography, she tries to construct mise-en-scènes of her fantasies, interrogating the politics of the gaze in relation to gender, sexuality, and desire. Although Li frequently engages with online platforms in her creative process, her works are shot with large-format photography and darkroom print. For her, photography is not a means of capturing fleeting moments, but rather an act of construction. By employing traditional film techniques, she tries to bring both instant digital illusions and her own fantasies into tangible reality.
 
The exhibition is curated by Tan Wei, Executive Director of Archives of Contemporary Art in China, Peking University, organized by BONIAN SPACE and Light Society. The exhibition will be appointment only from March 15th to May 17th, 2025.
